Although Eclipse is a well known success in the open source community, what is
less appreciated is that it represents the most successful model to date for
supporting collaborative industrial development of product-ready technologies.
Through open governance, transparent development processes and a commercial-friendly
licensing model Eclipse supports a new model for companies to share the cost and risk
of technology development. By establishing a rich and open innovation network, the many
contributors to Eclipse are changing the dynamics of the software industry.
Ralph Mueller started working for the Eclipse Foundation in September
2005. A computer scientist by trade, he sees the main focus of his work in the
exploration and building of the European Eclipse Eco System. In
addition to this, he is one of the main contact points in Central
Europe for companies and individuals that want to use Eclipse, provide
services around Eclipse or contribute to Eclipse. Based on his past
experience, he is also exploring collaboration with industries such as
Automotive or Aerospace with the goal to promote the Eclipse idea into
these areas.
Having been a software developer and a manager of software development teams in various companies, Ralph joined Object Technology International (OTI) in 1994, where he helped to found the European OTI organisation with its most prominent member, the OTI lab in Zurich - one of the cradles of Eclipse technology. Ralph then joined IBM, where he served as a lead architect for one of IBM's strategic initiatives for the Automotive industries.
